JS Injection vs. Real Content: A Critical Distinction

InLinks delivers links through a JavaScript snippet that you add to your site’s footer. The links aren’t written into your actual content—they’re injected dynamically when a visitor (or crawler) loads the page. The tool generates a per-page JSON file on InLinks’ servers, and that snippet fetches it at runtime to insert both the internal links and the schema markup into your DOM.

There are practical implications worth understanding:

  • Links live off your site. The link instructions are hosted by InLinks’ infrastructure. If the service goes down or you stop paying, the links disappear from your pages.
  •   Crawler uncertainty. While Googlebot does execute JavaScript, the timing and reliability of JS-injected content is inherently less certain than content baked into your HTML. Your links may not be seen as authoritative in-content signals.
  •   You never actually edit your posts. Nothing in your CMS changes. The “links” exist as an overlay, not as part of your content’s actual intellectual structure.

 

The AI Crawler Problem: JavaScript Is Invisible to the Engines That Matter Most

Here is the issue that doesn’t get discussed enough: AI crawlers almost certainly do not execute JavaScript. GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, and the other AI citation crawlers are lightweight HTTP bots. They fetch raw HTML and parse it. They do not spin up a browser rendering engine. They do not execute scripts.

This means InLinks’ JS-injected links, anchors, and schema are invisible to every AI citation crawler—the exact systems that determine whether your content gets cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and AI Overviews. The bots crawl your page and see the HTML as it was served from your server: no injected links, no injected schema, no semantic network. Just the raw content.

This isn’t just a links problem. InLinks uses the same JavaScript snippet to inject its schema markup—the About/Mentions JSON-LD and the FAQPage blocks are both written into the DOM at runtime by the same script. Per their own documentation, schema is generated server-side as a JSON payload and then “inserted into the DOM for crawlers to see” by the JS. But crawlers that don’t execute JavaScript never trigger that insertion. They see a page with a script tag in the footer and nothing else. Both the links and the schema are equally invisible.

What AI Crawlers Actually See on an InLinks-Powered Page

Even for Googlebot—which does execute JavaScript—the problem doesn’t fully go away. Your link network doesn’t exist in the raw document on first crawl, and for lower-priority pages it may not be rendered for a long time.

The defer attribute on InLinks’ script tag—visible in their JS snippet—means the script executes after HTML parsing completes. This is good for page load performance. But it doesn’t change the fundamental issue: any crawler that doesn’t execute JavaScript sees a page with no links and no schema injected, period. The implication is significant: a post is not described in isolation.
