The Problem With “AI Search” Vendor Pitches

If you’ve sat through a vendor demo recently, you’ve heard some version of this: “With AI search transforming how buyers find information, our platform optimizes your content for GEO, AEO, LLM SEO, and AI Overviews — ensuring your brand leads in the AI-first search landscape.”

That sentence is designed to sound comprehensive. It is designed to prevent you from asking the next question: “But what does your tool actually do?”

Here is what is happening. An entire ecosystem of content tools built for traditional SEO has had to rebrand for AI search. Some have added new terminology. Some have added new features. A few have built genuinely new capabilities. But the category labels have become so muddled that evaluating any of them requires a field guide just to decode what problem each one is actually solving.

This is that field guide.

Decoding the Acronym Soup: SEO, GEO, AEO, LLM SEO, AIO

Let’s name the terms so we can stop letting them obscure the conversation. Each acronym describes something real — they’re just not the same thing, and treating them as interchangeable is how budget gets spent on the wrong problem.

SEO — Search Engine Optimization

The original discipline: optimizing individual pages to rank in Google and Bing search results. Keywords, backlinks, page speed, metadata, technical site health. Still necessary. Still impactful. No longer sufficient on its own.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization

Optimizing for AI-generated answers — the responses that ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews produce when a user asks a question. GEO is about getting your content cited as a source in those AI-generated responses. Your goal is not to rank on a results page; your goal is to be the source an AI cites.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

Closely related to GEO. Optimizing for answer engines — tools designed to directly answer questions rather than return a list of links. Google’s featured snippets, voice search responses, and AI Overviews all fall in this category. AEO and GEO are often used interchangeably because they describe the same outcome: getting your content surfaced as the answer.

AI Overviews (AIO)

Google’s specific product implementation of AI-generated answers at the top of search results. Not a separate optimization discipline — a product feature. Showing up in AI Overviews is a GEO/AEO outcome.

For practical purposes, GEO, AEO, and AI Overviews represent the same operational goal: getting your content recognized and cited by AI systems in real-time answers. We will call this “AI Search” for the rest of this guide.

LLM SEO — Large Language Model SEO

This one is genuinely different from the others, and conflating it with AI Search is a significant mistake. Large Language Models learn from training data — the massive text corpora used to train ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others. LLM SEO is about influencing what these models absorb about your brand and expertise during training: being cited in sources that become training data, building presence in the ecosystem these models were built on.

This is a longer-horizon discipline. It is harder to measure in the short term. It matters — but it operates on a different timeline and requires a different strategy than optimizing for today’s AI Search citations.

The practical problem: Vendors apply all five of these terms, often interchangeably, to tools that may only address one of them — or one piece of one of them. A rank tracker is not a GEO tool. An entity-linking plugin does not influence LLM training data. A content brief generator does not optimize your site’s topical coherence for Google’s Helpful Content System. When you can’t tell the difference, you can’t spend the budget correctly.

What AI Search Systems Are Actually Evaluating

Before you can evaluate any tool, you need to understand what AI citation engines are actually measuring when they decide whose content to surface. The answer surprises most marketing leaders who built their content programs in the traditional SEO era.

AI systems recognize integrated expertise when your content explicitly shows HOW ideas relate to each other — not just that they share keywords. A post on lead scoring that links to a post on buyer personas with the sentence “lead scoring criteria depend on the persona characteristics defined here” signals connected thinking. A keyword-matched link to “buyer personas” provides no signal about the nature of the relationship. One tells AI that concepts are related. The other tells AI how.

3. Current, Well-Maintained, Connected Content

AI citation engines favor content that is clearly maintained, clearly organized, and clearly connected to related expertise on the same site. Orphaned posts, outdated content contradicting newer articles, and isolated topic clusters that should link to each other but don’t — all of these suppress authority signals.

Category 1: Traditional SEO Tools

What it doesn’t address: The architecture and connectivity of existing content. Category 3: Keyword-Based Internal Linking Tools

Examples: Link Whisper, Yoast SEO linking suggestions, AIOSEO

These tools identify pages that share keywords and suggest or automate links between them. They solve a real problem: manual internal linking is tedious and most teams never do it at scale.

What they don’t address: Why two pages should link beyond keyword overlap, how to write the linking sentence naturally, where in the post the link belongs, or what conceptual relationship exists between the content. Keyword matching tells search engines that pages share a word. It does not tell AI systems that the author understands how the ideas relate.

Category 4: Broad AI-SEO Platforms

Example: ThatWare

Platforms like ThatWare offer a comprehensive AI-SEO intelligence stack: keyword research, rank tracking, technical SEO, content alignment assessment, semantic cannibalization detection, LLM SEO guidance, and more. Their most sophisticated capabilities include embedding-based content overlap analysis and intent-alignment scoring at the section level.

What to understand: The most analytically sophisticated capabilities in this category often power platform outputs and managed consulting engagements rather than fully self-serve UI tools. If you want expert-guided AI-SEO strategy and have resources for a consulting-adjacent relationship, this category provides genuine depth. If you need a self-service tool your team operates independently, evaluate carefully what is exposed in the product UI versus what lives in the services layer.

Category 5: Content Volume Automation

Examples: RankYak, Jasper, Copy.ai

These tools generate and publish content at scale — often fully automated, with keyword discovery, article generation, and CMS publishing in a single pipeline. They are built for teams that need content volume quickly and want to minimize manual production effort.

What they don’t address: The architecture of what you already have. Publishing more content on top of an incoherent site architecture does not make the site more AI-visible. It makes it larger and equally scattered. Volume is a necessary ingredient in a content program — it is not a substitute for topical coherence.

Category 6: Entity-Based Semantic Tools

Example: InLinks

Entity-based tools identify the named topics and concepts in your content, map them to their Wikipedia definitions, and use that mapping to inject internal links and structured schema into your pages. This improves entity disambiguation for search engines and can improve structured data signals.

What to understand: Entity linking answers the question “what is this page about?” It does not answer “how does the idea in this post functionally relate to the idea in that other post?” Linking because two pages mention the same entity is not the same as linking because one post is a prerequisite for understanding the other. The relationship type itself is the signal AI systems read as expertise.

There is also a technical distinction worth noting: some entity-based tools inject links via JavaScript rather than writing them into your actual HTML content. This matters for AI crawlers — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot — which are lightweight bots that fetch raw HTML and do not execute JavaScript. Links injected at runtime are invisible to these crawlers. For AI Search visibility specifically, links need to live in your actual content.

Look across those six categories. Add up what they do. Then ask: which one actually optimizes the three signals AI citation engines evaluate — site-wide topical coherence, explicit semantic relationships, and current well-maintained content — as a single integrated workflow?

How to Think About Your Stack: A Decision Framework

These tool categories are not mutually exclusive, and most mature content programs need more than one. The question is sequencing and priority. Here is an honest framework based on where your content program is right now.

But first, a correction to conventional wisdom: start earlier than you think.
